King David Linksfield Pre-primary School

  By Wintec®

In early 2015 we learned that Gregory Katz Architecture designed and specified our Winblok® Total Window System in a very unique project for an educational facility in the Johannesburg area. The 1,700sqm King David Linksfield Pre-Primary School is a new state of the art educational facility, with 19 classrooms, a music room, media centre, performance space, therapy rooms and more. Naturally we were very excited to see the final result. When the project was featured recently on a number of major international design websites like designboom.com, we realized this was something truly special.

We managed to track down Greg for a response on this amazing project and this is what he had to say about his clever use of the Winblok® System:

We wanted to create a fun, playful environment – we used the extensive range of shapes and sizes of Winblok® and placed them at various specific heights so that they respond to the different eye-levels of the buildings users (kids and adults) and also frame different views. We also had this idea to make the columns on the colonnade out of the Winblok® System so that they resemble the kids stacked play-blocks – the configuration of blocks in each column is different. There is an important educational principle at pre-school level to use the shadows cast by the building as a measure of the passing of time – we introduced coloured glass into the “hollow” Winblok® columns to enhance play of light and colour as projected by the sun onto the colonnade floor.
